Safety Precautions

Do the activity in a well-ventilated space.
Wear gloves when handling epoxy resin and hardener liquids.
Do not touch the resin liquids with bare hands.
Wash hands with soap and water after the activity.
Epoxy resin and epoxy resin hardener is toxic to marine life and ecosystems and should be disposed appropriately.
Do not wash the resin mixture into the sink. Instead, remove excess resin mixture with tissue and dispose into general waste.

Instructions (Video)

1   Design your coaster by arranging the dried flowers in the silicone mould. Ensure that the flowers are flat and within the height of the mould.

2   Prepare 1 beaker and 1 stirrer and wear the gloves provided.

3   Pour 20ml of Epoxy Resin (A) and 20ml of hardener (B) into the beaker. (Note that the amount of liquid needed will vary according to the number of flowers added.)

4   Use the stirrer to mix the liquids well. Stir slowly to minimise the number of air bubbles in the mixture.

5   Pour the mixture into the mould until the brim. Use the stirrer to carefully adjust your design if needed.

6   Once satisfied, use a bowl to cover to minimise dust settling in.

7   Leave the resin to cure for 24 hours.

8   Remove excess resin mixture from the beaker using paper towels and dispose into general waste or peel off excess cured resin from the beaker after 24 hours.

9   Remove gloves and wash your hands with soap.

10 After 24 hours, carefully remove your cured resin from the mould and peel off the excess resin on the edge (if any).

Your coaster is now ready for use!

Caution: The edges of the solidified flowers may be sharp if not fully submerged prior to the curing process; as such, please handle with care.

The materials in the kit can make up to 5 coasters. Explore more using other decorative times!

What's Happening?

When epoxy resin (A) is mixed with the hardener (B), a chemical reaction occurs. The hardener reacts with the epoxide group in the resin liquid to form a new link. This reacted chemical compound will eventually interlink with one another forming a highly crosslinked structure which makes the cured resin hard. This process is also known as polymerization.
