STEM ALP@CVSS-ACES In this presentation, we will share on Compassvale Secondary School's Applied Learning Programme (ALP-ACES), which integrates Aeronautics, Coding, Engineering and Sustainability. Designed for lower-secondary students, it connects classroom learning in Physics, D&T and Mathematics with real-world applications, nurturing creativity, problem-solving and innovation through hands-on STEM projects.

Envisioning Green: Student Design Thinking for a Sustainable Future This sharing will focus on the use of design thinking in Applied Learning Programme (ALP) to educate students on sustainability focusing on resources management through renewable energy. Design thinking is a strategy to engage students in hands-on investigation and projects as students learn to understand the needs of stakeholders through context-based scenarios, brainstorm solutions and design projects in inventive ways, highlighting the importance of resource management and environmental responsibility. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to apply design thinking to guide students in sustainable-themed topics grounded in experiential learning activities and advance efforts in the development of emerging 21CC such as critical and inventive thinking as well as communication and collaboration skills in the students.

Developing Future-Ready Learners Through AI-Driven STEM In 2025, Peirce Secondary School transitioned its Applied Learning Programme (ALP) from a language-focused curriculum to one centred on STEM. The ALP has been identified as a key driver of the school's Future of Leaning initiative, with the overarching goal of nurturing future-ready learners. With a strong emphasis on AI-driven STEM, the programme equips students not only with Digital Literacy and Technology Skills (DLTS) but also with essential 21CC such as critical thinking, creativity and collaboration. This presentation will share how the school has developed its Tier 1 Curriculum using a project-based learning approach, enabling students to apply STEM knowledge in authentic, real-world contexts. It will also highlight the school's strategic partnership with Thales Singapore, a Pathfinder organisation supported by STEM Inc, which enhances industry relevance and provides students with meaningful exposure to STEM applications. In addition, the presenter will introduce the Tier 2 Programme, which extends learning beyond the classroom. Beginning with Makers' Learning, the programme progressively expands into emerging STEM domains such as drone technology and other innovation-driven fields. Together, these initiatives reflect the school's commitment to equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to thrive in a rapidly evolving future.

Designing for Smart and Sustainable Urban Living: Empowering Tomorrow's Creators Through Hands-On STEM Learning Jurong Secondary School’s Applied Learning Programme (ALP), Design for Smart and Sustainable Urban Living, equips students with the skills, mindset, and creativity to address real-world challenges in urban sustainability. Through a “hands-on, minds-on” curriculum, students engage in design thinking, coding, and prototyping to develop innovative solutions through practical themed projects like "Trash to Treasure" and "Smart Loveable Spaces." Students work with technology including Micro:bit and Quarky in our dedicated Imaginarium makerspace to develop prototypes that address urban challenges. The curriculum's effectiveness lies in its progressive curriculum. Secondary 1 students begin with fundamental STEM skills and sustainability concepts, while Secondary 2 students advance to tackling complex urban challenges. This is complemented by enrichment opportunities including industry visits, overseas learning journeys, and participation in activities beyond school. This presentation will share our interdisciplinary approach, examples of impactful student projects, and strategies for fostering creativity and problem-solving among our students in a rapidly changing world. We will also explore how this approach in design thinking and applied learning can be harnessed to engage students meaningfully, encouraging them to draw on diverse ideas and perspectives to shape a more sustainable future. |
Nurturing 21st Century Competencies Through ALP Our Applied Learning Programme empowers students to reimagine inclusive transportation through Design Thinking, AI-assisted design, and hands-on prototyping. Guided by the stages of Design Thinking—Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test—students develop innovative solutions for real-world challenges, from adaptive mobility aids to safer personal transport devices. Along the way, they strengthen their Adaptive Thinking, Inventive Thinking, and Communication skills, aligning with our school vision of nurturing Dynamic Learners, Exemplary Leaders, and Thoughtful Contributors. Through coding, creative problem-solving, and teamwork, students turn ideas into functional concepts that inspire change.

By coding sensors to track plant height and environmental factors, students gain hands-on experience in precision agriculture and data-driven analysis. This project not only promotes STEM skills but also empowers learners to explore sustainable farming methods through innovative technology.

Design Thinking for a Sustainable Future: Game-Making in the Applied Learning Programme Woodlands Ring Primary School's Applied Learning Programme (ALP) nurtures creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration through a design thinking approach anchored on the theme of sustainability. Spanning Primary 3 to Primary 5, students engage in game-design activities where they learn the value of empathy, brainstorm ideas, refine concepts, and prototype game designs to create meaningful solutions. The games developed encourage awareness of sustainable practices and advocate for causes such as animal conservation, reducing food waste, and water conservation. The programme culminates in a recess showcase where students present their prototypes to peers and gather feedback on their designs, inspiring the school community to embrace sustainable habits. This sharing highlights the ALP's development and implementation strategy, the infusion of sustainability into the learning process, how the school equips students with problem-solving skills using Design Thinking and how authentic, hands-on experiences build students’ confidence and joy in learning.

Option 1 PaperMech: Crafting Creativity into Engineering Learning Paper Mech is an innovative educational approach that combines traditional papercrafting with modern engineering principles, enabling learners to design and build interactive, mechanical devices using simple materials like paper, cardboard, and basic electronics. This hands-on method fosters creativity, problem-solving, and computational thinking, making engineering concepts accessible and engaging for students. Join us to discover how crafting with paper and cardboard can transform engineering education into an imaginative experience. In this workshop, educators will experience creative engineering and moving mechanisms while making your own paper machine using PaperMech. You will tinker with mechanical movements and assemble a paper machine from parts. Next, use your paper machine to animate a current or future imagined Singaporean landmark. By the end of the session, educators will gain familiarity with PaperMech resources that offer students a creative pathway into the world of engineering. NOTE: As this workshop will involve coding of Micro:bit, kindly bring along a fully-charged laptop.

Option 2 A Medley of Probabilistic Tunes With the widespread use of AI (artificial intelligence) tools, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects are on the ascendancy among educators and students. At the heart of STEM subjects lies the practice of asking questions, finding answers, and solving problems. In this workshop, participants will enhance these skills through a series of tasks that involve making decisions under conditions of uncertainty. Participants can look forward to exploring how the basic ideas from probability theory can be used to tackle a variety of problems, sharpen their intuition about randomness and understand its relationship with the information that can be extracted from a data set. Option 1 Empowering Learners through Project-Based Learning Project-Based Learning (PBL) empowers students to take ownership of their learning by engaging with authentic, real-world industry problem statements. Drawing on my experiences at Nanyang Polytechnic, this session explores how PBL principles can be adapted for primary and secondary classrooms to foster critical thinking, creativity, and resilience. Practical examples will illustrate how teachers can design projects that balance content master with 21CC while guiding students through ideation, collaboration, and reflection. Participants will leave with strategies to make PBL manageable in school settings and impactful for students, demonstrating how learning can extend beyond textbooks to nurture confident, future-ready learners.

Option 2 Smart Living with Micro:bit: Innovation in Sustainability, Health, Food, and Cities This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the Micro:bit platform. Through guided activities and real-world case studies, participants will explore how technology can address pressing challenges in sustainability, health, food science, and urban living. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to design and prototype automated solutions that contribute to smarter, healthier, and more sustainable communities. No prior coding experience is required - the workshop is designed for beginners and enthusiasts alike.

from the University of California at Berkeley, she has an interdisciplinary background in engineering design, science education and the learning sciences.

With respect to teaching, Dr. Hsi has designed and organised conferences and workshops sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation and given guest lectures at U.C. Berkeley, Boston College’s Learning Engineering program, and the InfoSys Foundation for K12 STEM teachers in PaperMech. When Dr. Hsi is not at work, she enjoys playing violin, baking, and oil painting.
