Designing for Smart and Sustainable Urban Living: Empowering Tomorrow's Creators Through Hands-On STEM Learning Jurong Secondary School (Cities & Urban Landscape) Jurong Secondary School’s Applied Learning Programme (ALP), Design for Smart and Sustainable Urban Living, equips students with the skills, mindset, and creativity to address real-world challenges in urban sustainability. Through a “hands-on, minds-on” curriculum, students engage in design thinking, coding, and prototyping to develop innovative solutions through practical themed projects like "Trash to Treasure" and "Smart Loveable Spaces." Students work with technology including Micro:bit and Quarky in our dedicated Imaginarium makerspace to develop prototypes that address urban challenges. The curriculum's effectiveness lies in its progressive curriculum. Secondary 1 students begin with fundamental STEM skills and sustainability concepts, while Secondary 2 students advance to tackling complex urban challenges. This is complemented by enrichment opportunities including industry visits, overseas learning journeys, and participation in activities beyond school. This presentation will share our interdisciplinary approach, examples of impactful student projects, and strategies for fostering creativity and problem-solving among our students in a rapidly changing world. We will also explore how this approach in design thinking and applied learning can be harnessed to engage students meaningfully, encouraging them to draw on diverse ideas and perspectives to shape a more sustainable future. |
