We begin by tackling the definition of energy – what does it mean, and how can we make it easy to remember? This brings us on to our first demo – seeing energy do work in action, by watching the energy in ethanol set off a rocket as it’s lighted. The presenter then takes us through the different types of energy stores, and explores how each of them can do work.
By using volunteers and audience participation, we explain the different stores, and witness the live transfer of energy. From flaming butane bubbles to exploding tin cans, we look at the movement of energy from one store to another, underlining the notion that energy cannot be created or destroyed.
The show ends by considering innovative methods of energy generation, with a demonstration explaining the mechanics of wind turbines, and how they, as well as hydroelectric and solar power, are scientists’ focus for a renewable future.
