Besides gravity, electromagnetism is the next most encountered force in our everyday life. It is of immense practical importance and underlies numerous innovations that propelled humanity into the modern age e.g. electricity generation (motors and transformers), modern communications and optics. In this workshop, participants will re-enact Ørsted's experiment that shows that an electric current gives rise to a magnetic field. They will measure magnetic forces using a current balance, derive the magnetic field constant U0 and use it to determine the strength of Earth's magnetic field.
