Kinds of inflorescences

The part of the plant which bears a cluster of flowers is called an inflorescence. There are many kinds of inflorencences. The more common ones are shown below.

| A raceme is like a spike but its flowers have stalks.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
A cyme is a broad, more or less flat-topped inflorescence with central flowers blooming first. Examples are Hairy Clidemia (Clidemia hirta) and Singapore Rhododendron (Melastoma malabathricum).

|
|
|
|
A head or capitulum is a round or flat-topped infloresence with a cluster of flowers which have no stalks. Examples are Yellow Creeping Daisy (Wedelia trilobata), Touch-me-not (Mimosa pudica) and Club-wort (Adenostemma lavenia).

|
|
|
|
A panicle is an elongated inflorescence with a central axis along which are single or branched racemes or spikes.
