Visitor Info - ScienceAlive PDA Guide

Science Alive PDA Guide

In line with Singapore Science Centre's mission to "promote interest, learning and creativity in science and technology, through imaginative and enjoyable experience...", the centre embarked on the ScienceAlive PDA project with the aim of revolutionizing visitors' experience and injecting fun into learning. The ScienceAlive PDA engages the visitors with a myriad of multimedia and information on the exhibits in the Centre's galleries.

ScienceAlive probes beyond know application boundaries that had been set for Wireless Lan. Traditionally, Wireless Lan networks have been used to increase office productivity by removing the hassle of cables and allowing employees network access anytime, anywhere. ScienceAlive is based on a technology that pushes Wireless Lan application beyond conceptual boundaries by using it as a medium to pinpoint a user's location and then deliver a location-specific, rich media educational tour.

** Signal Strength from 3 Wireless Access Points (minimum)
** Engine triangulates and calculates signal strength

Harnessing this advanced positioning technology, ScienceAlive provides visitors with the following experiences:

1) Virtual Tour Guide - ScienceAlive guides users to the specific learning trails and imparts information on the various exhibits in SSC.

2) Location finder /map - ScienceAlive acts as a map for visitors to navigate the entire area of SSC and move from one hall to the next.

3) Exhibit multimedia - ScienceAlive provides users with updated videos, sounds, images and text on the exhibits.

4) Show Alerts - ScienceAlive will notify users of the various shows that are available in the SSC.

5) Exhibition beyond walls - ScienceAlive facilitates continuous education and learning by allowing users to request selected exhibit information to be sent to their personal email accounts.

The ScienceAlive system is the first ever to be implemented across the whole of Asia. Similar concepts are being deployed in Europe and the United States; most notably UK's Tate Museum (www.tate.org.uk), where it has been an enormous success among those aged between 12-23 years old.

In the Singapore Science Centre, the ScienceAlive system was officially launched to the public on 13 June 2005, and visitors are now able to rent out these PDAs at a promotional price of two dollars each. The PDAs are available at the ScienceAlive booth located just within the entrance to the Singapore Science Centre.
