ScienceNet is a World Wide Web resource database in Science. It is a community service project by Science Centre Singapore, supported by Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore.
We offer free electronic access to various topics in Science and Technology. Feel free to browse through our database and see if we have the answers to your questions.
Life Sciences - Genetics/ Reproduction
Q20093 : I am the only daughter in my family, and I have red hair, just like my mum. My brothers have black hair, so does my dad. Why do I have red hair when I am a pure Chinese? And why is it that only my mum and I have red hair? We have no history of Caucasians inter-marrying with Chinese in our family.
Q20091 : Why is an albino person sensitive to bright light? Does their choroid contain black pigments? Do their retina contain rod and cone cells?
Q19998 : How come sperm tails are lost before sperm heads in semen samples? Also, do the heads last shorter or longer than other forensically significant proteins like p30 in semen?
Q19866 : I have heard that having students use the well-known PTC paper taste test as a genetics lab is dangerous because it can be harmful to students. Is this true? Can you tell me something about the toxicity of PTC? Do you recommend I discontinue using this lab?
Q19828 : How to explain that not all flowering plants can bear fruits and if so then how do they propagate naturally?
Q19798 : Do identical twins have identical DNA?
Q19762 : Are spores always found on the underside of fronds, like mushroom and the bird's nest fern? Why? Does being on the underside help in its dispersal?
Q19700 : I've some rather specific questions about eggs, which I couldn't find the answers to on your database and on other websites. I do hope you can help me!
a) How does the embryo in an egg utilise the albumen? Does it use the protein from the albumen for in its development?
b) I understand that the fertilised sex cell divides to eventually form the embryo. Is the yolk the sex cell, or does it simply contain and nourish the fertilised sex cell as it divides within? (since the yolk continues to nourish the chick for some hours after it hatches).
c) Am I correct to presume that since the albumen is added on after fertilisation, it is not part of the fertilised cell? Thanks for your time!
Q19632 : How did the first human come to be?
Q19536 : I would like to enquire if this statement is correct: Internal fertilisation takes place in all female animals. Thanks.
Q19456 : Is the chicken egg a big cell?
Q19420 : What medical condition is hermaphroditism?
Q19339 : What are dimples and how are they formed?
Q19243 : I understand that traits such dimples and unattached earlobes are considered dominant traits. Is it possible for a child to have such traits when both parents do not exhibit such traits? Is it possible for such traits to "skip a generation"?
Q19242 : Can a pair of Siamese twins be one male, one female?
Q19187 : Is this possible for the children of a couple to roll their tongues but yet one of the parents cannot do so?
Q19145 : Since potatoes reproduce asexually, and asexually reproduction creates offspring of identical properties to their parents, are all potatoes of the same species in the world generally identical?
Q19140 : What is the percentage of people having freckles? What is the gene locus for freckles?
Q19028 : Can you see the sperms physically whether it is fertile or not?
Q18967 : I will like to know if the sperm cells are not ejaculated during sexual contact but are absorbed and destroyed by the body, is it still possible for the sperm cells to ejaculate by itself? How do the excess sperm cells ejaculate by themselves through wet dreams etc? How can we know whether sperm cells are defective or not? Thanks!
Q18865 : How did Siamese twins occur?
Q18856 : How twins occur and having a boy and a girl for twin?
Q18789 : How is sperm produced?
Q18341 : Is it possible for a girl to get pregnant before she ever has her period?
Q16018 : Who was the English scientist who gave the first accurate description of colour blindness?
Q15631 : If my and my Husband's blood group are both 0+, what would my child's blood group be? The answer you give is how many percent accurate? Thank you.
Q13911 : What method do forensic scientists use to detect sperm?
Q12514 : How do euglena reproduce?
Q11692 : I am currently seeing a woman who at one time had an ovary removed due to a tubal pregnancy. We are discussing having children some day are wondering how this procedure has effected her fertility. Her monthly cycle seems perfectly normal. It is almost exactly twenty eight days and we are able to pinpoint the beginning menstruation date (and what she believes is ovulation) to within a one or two day period. Is she in fact releasing an egg every cycle even though she only has one ovary?
Q10988 : Could you tell me more about HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) and what it is used for?
Q10117 : What is the gestation period for blue whale, monkey, rat and cat?
Q10075 : How dependable is the withdrawal method of birth control?
Q9997 : How do hens lay non-fertilised eggs? If eggs do not get fertilised, why are they laid? Do non-farm hens lay an egg a day, or much less?
Q9845 : Will the tail of a human sperm drop after it has fertilised an human egg?
Q7015 : Because of parthenogenesis in insects, humans (either male or female) will be able to produce offspring asexually. Is it true or not true?
Q6870 : Can I get pregnant when I am having my period? Why and why not?
Q6117 : So at what point are chicken eggs fertilised? Is it before or after the eggs are laid? Are the eggs that we eat simply unfertilised eggs?
Q5960 : How does a rooster fertilise a hen's egg? Does he have a penis, etc or what? I had always seen and believed that the hen carried the sperm and it was released within her to the egg when the rooster got on her back and pulled her comb. I am 65 years old and have had college level biology but do not remember the answer. I guess the answer would apply to all fowl. My wife recently asked me the question and I was embarrassed to say I did not know. Thanks and best wishes.
Q5898 : Is it possible for one person to have different coloured eyes? Can eye colours be explained using Mendelain Genetics, or is it polygenic?
Q5685 : How long can a human sperm live inside and outside the human body?

Q3734 : Which part of an egg develops into a young chick? Do we usually refer to it as the embryo or the yolk?
Q3348 : There was a medical report in the papers saying that the frequency of having sex can affect a man's health. Both abstinence from sexual intercourse as well as too frequent ejaculations can lead to different types of cancer. Is this report reliable? If so, what is the ideal frequency of having sex? What should we do to protect ourselves?
Q3343 : If a zygote split up to form identical twins, is it always the case that both babies will be of the same sex? A report states that the distribution of blood types in decreasing order is O+ blood followed by A than B and AB. Since O+ blood contains recessive alleles, why is it that a higher percentage of people have the O+ blood group? Wouldn't it be more logical that more people would have blood group (A & B) since they have dominant alleles?
Q3326 : How long does it take for the human sperm to reach the egg? How long can sperm and egg remain viable for fertilisation?
