Singapore Amazing Machine Competition 2009

 

The SAMC is a science competition where teams dream up and construct a complex machine (the Amazing Machine) that performs a seemingly simple task in as many steps as possible. This competition rewards teamwork, creativity, thinking outside of the box, problem solving and the inventive spirit.

To win, each team needs to construct a machine that successfully carries out the task in the most number of steps. Teams will also be judged on their creativity and the incorporation of scientific concepts in the machines.

Special category prizes will also be rewarded for the following machines:
- Most Creative
- Most Popular
- Most Environmentally Friendly
- Overall Top School

WHAT IS THIS YEAR'S TASK?

For 2009, the task is to design a machine that could hoist your school flag.

WHO CAN TAKE PART?

This competition is open to students studying at the following levels:
- Division 1: Primary 4 - 6
- Division 2: Secondary 1 - 3

Teams (up to a maximum of 5 students each) from various levels will compete in the stated divisions. Separate winners will be chosen for each Division.

There is no limit to the number of entries that each school can send.

Please download Entry Forms (Annex A) and Plan of Machine (Annex B) and submit the completed forms through your teacher. All forms are to be submitted to NUS High School by

Deadline for submission of Annex A: Official Entry Form is 29 April 2009, Wednesday and Annex B: Machine Plan is 15 May 2009, Friday.

 

WHEN IS THE COMPETITION GOING TO BE HELD?

Teams who are shortlisted for the finals will be announced on the website or through e-mail on 1 June 2009.

The Finals will be held at the Science Centre on the following dates:
- 20-21 August - Set-up of machine
- 22 August - Final Judging & prize presentation

2nd Prize          - Creative VADO

3rd Prize          - iPod Shuffle
