Exhibitions - Ecogarden

Ecogarden

You are about to enter the garden with a difference! Yes, the Ecogarden, short for Ecology Garden, is not an ordinary garden or public park. It is a place unadulterated by the urban environment and is packed with nature's very own action. A "Garden of Eden" recreated !
From insects like the catepillars and dragonflies to common fruit trees; from the vegetable farm to the mini-lime corner, it's action galore as you witness the dynamic "eat and be eaten" world that inhabits the Ecogarden.
What's in the Ecogarden?

Rubber Centenary Monument
Trace the history of the rubber industry in Singapore from its humble beginning with just eleven trees.

Mini-Rubber Plantation
Have a close encounter of the "rubbery kind" at the plantation with its crop of high-yielding rubber tree clones. Who knows E.T. might just drop by !

Fernarium
Home to many types of water and land dwelling ferns, including the Mosquito Fern which is the smallest fern in the world. A sight not the be missed by "Fernatics" !

Mini-Orchard
Just about your only chance in Singapore where you can take a stroll amidst a whole range of fruit trees. But no plucking please (unless you have wings and feathers) as the fruits here are strictly restricted for birds !
Lime Tree Corner
An "en-lime-tening" experience awaits you as you browse through the different varieties of lime trees. Look out for the yellowish-white lime butterflies and catepillars which are very partial to the lime plants.

EcoLab
Be "Sherlock Holmes" and investigate the plants and animals of the Ecogarden through hand lens and microscopes (open to students only).
Medicinal Garden
Want to know what plants can cure your pimples ? Find out at the medicinal garden. To top it all, medicinal plants can also be easily planted at home !

The Ponds
You'll never realise that activities in the ponds are even busier than weekend Orchard Road till you see it for yourself. Each pond is unique, harbouring its own plants and animals. Fascinating insights not be be missed !

Common Wayside Trees
Everything you ever need to know about trees lining our roads are here ! You'll have no problem identifying them the next time you encounter them along the roads.

Culinary Garden
Be it curry chicken, mutton soup or Sichuan braised duck - all these Asian gourmet delights will never taste the same without these spice plants grown at the fragrant spot.
Economic Crop Mini-Plantation
Another unique corner, with a variety of economically important plants such as cashew, coffee, oil palm, eucalyptus, coconut and cocoa. Watch out for falling coconuts !

Leaf Litter Corner
We are not surprised if you misconstrue that someone has thrown all the debris of a good week's gardening here ! It is meant for the study of how little animals and microbes break down all the rubbish in this heap and return nutrients to the soil.

Vegetable Beds
Mary ! Mary ! Quite contrary, how do the vegetables grow ? With kangkong shoots and groundnut plants and tapioca all in a row. See if you can spot the beanstalk but is Jack around ?
