Meet the Scientist is a series of monthly talks at the Singapore Science Centre, where distinguished scientists from A*STAR's Research Institutes will be invited to share their experiences. These talks allow students and Science Centre Singapore visitors to interact with real-life scientists, and know more about interesting scientific research topics, as well as what motivates scientists to be passionate about their work. Don't miss this opportunity to interact with the scientist! There will be an exciting series of sessions in 2010!

"Biodiesel- the Clean, Green and Renewable Fuel for Diesel Engines"
Speaker:Dr Mahabubur Rahman Talukder, Institute of Chemical Engineering and Sciences Date & Time:21 July 2010 (Wed), 3.30pm Venue: Science Centre Singapore Abstract: We are running out of fossil fuels. However, world energy consumption is rising as the population and demand increases. Annual demand of oil is four times greater than the volume of new oil reserve discovered. To solve this problem, people seek new alternatives to sustain their needs for energy. The long chain fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), which is collectively known as biodiesel, is a clean and green fuel that can be used as an alternative of petro-diesel. Biodiesel is safe for the environment, biodegradable, and produces significantly less air pollutants than diesel fuel. Biodiesel does not contribute to the global warming as it is carbon neutral. Biodiesel is currently produced from vegetable oils or animal fats. However, vegetable oils or animal fats are limited, and consumed as food. Therefore, there is a need for alternative feedstocks for the sustainable biodiesel production. We, the researcher in ICES (Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences), are working on alternative feedstocks such as algal, yeast and fungal oils. The method needed for processing such alternative feedstocks to biodiesel is being developed. The updated research results will be presented on the MTS session.
Bio: Mahabubur Rahman Talukder, male, Chemical Engineer, graduated from Chemistry and Chemical Engineering department, Kanazawa University (JAPAN) in 2004. From 2004-2005, he worked as a Research Fellow at A*STAR's Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences (ICES), Singapore. He worked in Kobe University (Japan) as a visiting scientist for one year. He returned to ICES as a Senior Research Fellow in 2006. He has published 40 papers and received two awards in his career. His research interests are biocatalysis in organic media, bioprocess engineering, genetic engineering and screening of lipase producing microorganism.
Career Seminar - What makes me a Scientist?
Speakers:Dr Grace Huiqi Wang (IMRE), Dr Lee Yih Yean (BTI) and Dr Rui-Feng Xue (IME) Date & Time:23 July 2010, 3.30pm (Friday) Venue: Science Centre Singapore Abstract:What is your ambition? Is it to be a Doctor? Lawyer? Or a Scientist? Here's your chance to meet a group of Scientists based in Singapore. Find out from them why they became scientists, their qualifications, job scopes and working environments! The scientists are from different research fields and participants are welcome to ask them questions and find out more about them and their career!
Facilitated by Dr Tsai Her mann (SCS-DSO Fellow), join us to learn more about having Science as your career!
About the speakers: 1) Dr Grace Huiqi Wang from Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) Dr Wang will be sharing her research interest on compound semiconductor electron devices, photonic devices and optoelectronic integration. This includes light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which are commonly used in signs, signals and displays.
2) Dr Lee Yih Yean from Bioprocessing Technology Institute (BTI) Dr Lee is a Research Scientist who is currently the Process & Media Development Lead of the Animal Cell Technology Group. His main interests are in mammalian cell culture systems, especially in the field of recombinant protein production in mammalian cells.
3) Dr Rui-Feng Xue from Institute of Microelectronics (IME) Dr Xue received the Ph. D. degree in electronics engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, in 2005. He is currently a Senior Research Engineer at IME, and his research interests include CMOS RF/mixed-mode IC, RF and antenna system, and biomedical IC design.
