"For his contribution to molecular medicine, and research in human genetic diseases and infections."
Dr Eric Yap started his career trained as a medical doctor. This early experience equipped him with a strong background and led him to explore new areas of clinical applications in molecular biology and genetics. He earned his Ph.D at Oxford University under a Rhodes Scholarship.
He has made significant contributions to the development and application of molecular diagnostic methods for infectious diseases and genetics. He devised improvements on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and his lab has developed diagnostic assays for over 50 human pathogens, including the endemic bacterium causing melioidosis. In collaboration with the Nanyang Technological University, Dr Yap developed an integrated PCR chip capable of handling sample preparation, DNA amplification and fluorescent detection. This invention has since been patented and commercialised.
Dr Yap has actively investigated the susceptibility genes for complex diseases such as myopia, autoimmune diseases and hypertension. Dr Yap has made major inroads especially in the field of myopia, a polygenic condition that is a difficult field of study. He is regarded as a pioneer in the field of molecular genetics of human diseases within the region.
In addition to active research and development work, Dr Yap played an important role in establishing the Defence Medical Research Institute of Defence Science & Technology Agency. The Institute, with over 100 scientists and researchers, is unique in the region and one of a few worldwide that conducts and integrates multidisciplinary research in the human sciences.
As a young scientist, Dr Yap is highly accomplished in his field. His passion for science and his leadership qualities makes him an excellent role model for young researchers and doctors interested in biomedical research For his contribution to molecular medicine, and research in human genetic diseases and infections, Dr Eric Yap Peng Huat is presented the 2002 Ministerial Citation.
