Primary Science Learning Experience

WELCOME to the Singapore Science Centre's Primary Science Learning Experience or PSLE. Opened in Agugust 2005, the PSLE is an exhibition based on the topics of the primary school science syllabus. It contains exhibits that explain scientific concepts in hands-on ways. These exhibits are part teaching aids, part models and even part experiments. They are intended to illustrate the basic scientific principles (that are required learning in the primary school science syllabus). Although mainly intended to be clarifying and reinforcing (of what is taught in the classroom), they are also designed to be "open-ended" - to lead to more questions and to guide students through a more fulfilling learning experience!

The principal mission of the PSLE is to provide exhibits that assist teachers and parents to develop the progressive understanding of the syllabus-mandated scientific concepts in their young charges. Some of these topics are:

Life Cycles . Heat & Temperature . Magnets & Magnetism . States & Properties of Matter . Plant Reproduction & Propagation . Populations & Communities . Energy & Energy Conversion . Forces . Simple Machines . many more!

Information for schools

A teacher may lead or guide his/her class to study pre-selected topics by working through the related exhibits. Or, allow his/her students to explore the (specific) topics and exhibits on their own. Some demonstration kits and apparatuses are also available for loan by teachers. (See Resources.) These may only be used within the PSLE. Exhibit-linked worksheets are continuously developed and modified, and are available (upon request) to teachers who book sessions to use the PSLE. (See Worksheets.) Teachers are encouraged to preview the exhibition and resources in order to customise their students' learning experience with your own material and needs.

The PSLE is open to schools which may book sessions for their classes during the Science Centre's regular operating hours. Reservations must be made through our EduCampus online booking system. Booking through EduCampus is requesting entry into the Science Centre. If we do not respond within 3 working days, please contact School Services via e-mail or call 64252525/6.

Through such reservations, and under certain circumstances, the entire PSLE can be closed to all other visitors, ie you may have the entire PSLE for your own use for a block of about 90 minutes. Please specify any resources you may wish to borrow well ahead of your visit. You should use these webpages to view the exhibits and the resources available. Separate sessions for teachers to preview the exhibition and the resources may also be arranged.

It is advisable to optimise your visit by limiting the group size (in the PSLE) to about 60 pupils at any one time. (Bigger cohorts can be divided into smaller groups and rotated between the PSLE and our other interesting galleries.) This is to keep the noise levels in the PSLE as low as possible in order for effective learning to take place.

Information for the public

The PSLE is of course open to the public during the Centre's regular opening hours. Parents and other groups are most welcome to make use of the facilities for their children's science learning and exploration. However, the resources are not available (for other than bookings from schools).
