![]() ![]() Primary Science Learning Experience PS–67 Crazy Mirror ![]() TRY THIS Stand ~2m from the mirror. Move slowly towards it. What do you see if you move your head up/down quickly? WHAT IS HAPPENING All smooth mirrors obey (Specular) Reflection: light from any object in view reflects off the mirror at very specific angles. The convex (upper) and concave (lower) cylindrical surfaces stretch/squeeze/flip your vertical image. The floor-wall edge curves towards, then smoothly turns upside-down and away from you! You are upright in the convex but upside-down in the concave part. You look shorter. Moving closer, an image of the lower half mirror, appears around its middle. Squatting just in front of the concave, you appear upright and stretched. Moving your head quickly may nauseate you, like motion sickness. The position of your eyes affects the images you see because the reflection angles can change very quickly due to the curved surface. |
