TRY THIS Move the camera until you get a good view on the monitor. Follow the instructions given on each screen. Use the paddle to "pick up" and "drop" one of the lifeforms onto various locations on the screen. Observe what happens to the selected lifeform. Work through the various screens to see how different lifeforms are believed to have evolved. Change screens by gently "tapping" the virtual buttons with the paddle.

WHAT IS HAPPENING Evolution is one of the central and important idea in biology. Basically, it states that lifeforms change (evolve) with time, forming new species. Or, all existing lifeforms evolve from completely different, earlier lifeforms. Population changes (genetic variations) occur by mutation and genetic drift from generation to generation. Natural Selection acts on these genetic variations among individuals – those with genes that happen to be able to better adapt to their (changing) environment (for example), are "selected" to survive.

This game uses a technology called mixed reality. The patterns on the white platform are used as "co-ordinates" by the camera-computer to project the virtual scenes and points of view for the various screens. The movement of the pattern on the paddle within the camera's view is also converted by the computer to the on-screen magnifier. Each screen plays out different aspects of evolution.
