PS–53   Arch Bridge
Click this picture to return to the Listing of Exhibits.

TRY THIS
Assemble the 5 colour blocks to build the arch bridge. Hold the handrail and walk across it. Stand on each block to test if it is stable. Why? Why not?

WHAT IS HAPPENING
All blocks of the arch bridge share a compressing load when you walk/stand on them. This means that all the pieces are being squeezed against one another. The supporting ends or anchors must be very stable and resist the forces pushing vertically on them and the forces pushing them apart. Do the backbones of "pack" animals suffer the same loading?
