TRY THIS Look at the hanging frame through this fascinating piece of equipment. Compare what you see with what you see through the pseudoscope. Are you confused?
WHAT IS HAPPENING The pseudoscope helps your eyes to play tricks on you. The background seems to become the foreground; while the foreground seems to become the background. That is, the pseudoscope reverses object depth. This optical illusion was first described by Sir Charles Wheatstone (1802-1875) who also invented the first stereoscope to reproduce the illusion of depth from 2-dimensional pictures. Being also interested in pseudoscopic vision, where objects appear to be inside out, he used mirrors to "cross" images: redirecting an image intended for the right eye to the left instead, and vice versa. |
