![]() ![]() Primary Science Learning Experience PS–36 Giant Clam (Tridacna spp) ![]() WHAT IS HAPPENING These are a small but well-known family of large shells - the largest is Tridacna gigas which can exceed 1.2m in width. Living in shallow tropical waters, they anchor themselves onto rocks or corals, using their silk-like threads which emerge from their byssal gapes (openings). The gapes also let in sunlight which helps algae to grow within the shells' mantle. Being a valuable seafood, they have been harvested indiscriminately. Their collection is now monitored. |
