WHAT IS HAPPENING This instrument is a zoetrope. It is the primitive version of motion picture. Our brain retains the series of still pictures we see for fractions of a second each. This tendency is known as the persistence of vision. Each picture is a snapshot of a figure in a different pose of motion. By spinning the zoetrope at an appropriate speed, the persistence of vision "tricks" us into thinking we see the serial pictures as a continuous flow - in effect, a movie clip. Can you tell the difference in the perceived motion if you spin the zoetrope in the opposite direction? What is the effect of spinning it faster/slower?
