![]() ![]() Primary Science Learning Experience PS–22 Simple Machines – Gears ![]() TRY THIS Turn both knobs at the same speed. Do the "barber shop" signs spin at the same speed? Why? WHAT IS HAPPENING Gears are simple machines that help us make work easier. Gears are wheels with "teeth". Gears with different diameters but having the same teeth sizes and gaps between teeth, can be linked to change rotation, speed and turning forces (torques) from one point to another. One knob turns a small gear that is connected to succeeding, larger gears that turn its sign. The other knob turns a large gear that is connected to succeeding, smaller gears that turn its sign. Increasing gear sizes decreases the rotational speed; while decreasing gear sizes increases the rotational speed. Can you feel the torques required to turn the gear trains? |
