PS–11   Material Property – Robustness
Click this picture to return to the Listing of Exhibits.

TRY THIS
Push the button. Watch the crank turn and the pointed hammers strike the samples. Are there any differences between the depths of the impact points?

WHAT IS HAPPENING
Since each hammer hits its sample at the same points and with the same force, the depths of the dents show the "hardness" of each sample material. Material hardness usually compares the depths of surface scratches or "digs". Diamond is the hardest substance - it is ranked 10 on the Moh Scale of Hardness. The harder the substance, the more resistant it is to scratches or dents. Do you think this method of comparison can be used when considering soft, elastic material like rubber?
