PS–10   Material Property – Magnetism
Click this picture to return to the Listing of Exhibits.

TRY THIS
Turn the knob to point the rod at each material along the side. Which material has what effect on the magnet at the end of the rod?

WHAT IS HAPPENING
Magnetic materials are materials that possess magnetism or attract magnets. Their atomic arrangements determine the strength of their magnetic property. A material that retains its magnetic properties permanently is ferromagnetic. The main ferromagnetic elements are iron, cobalt and nickel. Some metals like aluminium and stainless steel have irregular atomic arrangements and are classified as paramagnetic. "Non-magnetic" materials are neither ferro- nor para-magnetic; they are diamagnetic and are not attracted by magnets.
