![]() ![]() Primary Science Learning Experience PS–08 Hot Air Rises ![]() TRY THIS Push the button. What do you see on the white screen? What happens to the horizontal strip? WHAT IS HAPPENING The heater heats the air immediately above it. Hot air expands (becoming less dense than the surrounding air density) and rises (mixing with and pushing the cooler air about). Simultaneously, cooler air (from the sides) moves into the space immediately above the heater. The mixing of hot-cold air changes its physical (density) and optical (refractivity) properties. The light passing through the mixing air shows these changes as whirling shadows on the screen. The bimetallic strip above the heater curves downwards as it gets hot. |
