Hurry! Sign up soon to avoid disappointment!

"I spy with my Little Eye" - Glass Engraving Workshop
Date: 1, 2, 8 & 9 June 2012
Time: 1 & 8 June - 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm
2 & 9 June - 9.30 am to 11.30 am
Target Audience: Minimum age 8 years old & above
Synopsis: An exciting hands-on workshop conducted by glass artist Dominic Fonde that mixes the art of glass engraving with Science!

This programme takes participants on an exploration to discover nature at the Eco-garden at Science Centre using a small spherical lens which Dominic will create using a rod of glass and bead torch.

This simple round lens is a recreation of a 17th century microscope made by Van Leeuwenhoek.  In doing so, participants will experience what it  was like to work with scientific tools of the 17th century and see how artistic skills were employed to document scientific discoveries  during that time.

Dominic will introduce a technique known as drill engraving and coach participants to use the drills to create an image which they had ‘spied’ on earlier with the round lens microscope.

Dominic will also share his experiences as an artist working with glass and discuss the discoveries of Robert Hooke, the Father of Microscopy, and Van Leuwenhoek, and demonstrate the connections between Art and Science. This is an exciting experience not to be missed!
